What is a smog check?
A smog check is California’s vehicle emissions inspection, run by the Bureau of Automotive Repair. A licensed station checks that the emissions parts are present and working and reads the on-board computer or measures the exhaust. Most vehicles need one every other year at renewal once they are more than eight model years old, when they are sold, and when first registered here.
| Check | What the inspector does | Which vehicles |
|---|---|---|
| Visual | Looks for missing, modified or disconnected emissions parts | All |
| Functional | Tests the parts work, including the check engine light | All |
| On-board computer | Reads trouble codes and readiness monitors | Most 2000 and newer |
| Tailpipe | Measures exhaust gases with a probe | Pre-2000 model years |

How much does a smog check cost in California?
Each station sets its own price. Stations reported a statewide average of $69.16 to BAR for August 2026, plus the $8.25 state certificate when the car passes, and coupon prices on SmogCheckDeals usually run well below that. Live medians by county are in the smog check price report.
Which kind of smog check station do I need?
A test-only station inspects but can’t repair; a test-and-repair station can do both. A STAR station is either kind, certified by BAR to higher performance standards. You need a STAR station only when your DMV renewal notice says so or the car was identified as a gross polluter; otherwise any licensed station will do.

Frequently asked questions
There is no separate "DMV authorized" list. The Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) licenses smog check stations for the DMV, and a passing result goes to the DMV electronically from any licensed station. This directory is built from BAR's license register; a station whose licence we couldn't confirm as current says so on its page, and BAR's Auto Shop Locator at bar.ca.gov/locator is the official check.
Bring the vehicle and, if you have it, your DMV renewal notice, which says whether a STAR station is required. The check engine light must be off. Pay the station’s inspection price plus the $8.25 state certificate when the car passes.
About 30 minutes for the inspection itself, according to BAR. A passing certificate is valid for 90 days and goes to the DMV electronically.
A smog check is the inspection; a STAR smog check is the same inspection at a station BAR has certified to higher performance standards. You need a STAR station only when your DMV renewal notice says so, or for a vehicle identified as a gross polluter.
